The printer I received prints only lightly and has a big line of white space down the left side through what does print.

I thought the problem was the cartridge. The seller sent another cartridge. I tried it and the machine still didn't work. I tested the cartridges on my HP 1020 at work and the cartridges work fine. It is this printer that is defective.

I am letting the seller know. This machine will have to be returned for a refund.

I ordered an HP 1020 because I have one at work that has never had a problem in four years.

But this one is no good.

I've had mine for at least 4 years of casaul printing. Hasn't needed a replacement cartridge yet. Really gets the pages moving quickly and doesn't take up much space. I highly recommend it!

Would not sell for 300 even though bought for 80 because this printer is amazing! I have used for maybe 3 years and only replaced the ink cartridge once and print all the time. Quality Prints, Quiet and Nearly Instant prints. What else could you want?I

Find one of these. You won't be disappointed.

We currently have three of these printers throughout our business, because we liked them so well we ordered this one for another office.

I bought this printer Winter term of 2006. I have gone through 2 cartridges since getting it. Factor: Fall 2006, Spring 2008, and now Spring 2010.

I used this printer in 2006 for my business classes upon graduating. Then the job searches, interviews, printing resume/portfolio, printing directions, and so on.

I am know in my masters, the teachers play this sick joke of giving the students about 150 pages per class per week to read. So have I gotten my moneys worth? You betcha, now I am off to buy a new cartridge. I would say not bad if you think about the cost/value aspect.

Printer cost me: about $150, toner about $30 = about $250 for 3 years of having it = $80 per year cost. If I had an ink jet I would be in so much financial trouble due to my printouts. If you don't care about color (I don't) then you save more money and time in the long run. Great for school, great for printing documents quickly.

Oh, the trees I have killed.

This printer, though mostly functional when connected to a Windows box, did not work without significant amounts of effort when connected to a Mac. Customer support at HP was not helpful in resolving my Mac connectivity issues. I eventually got it working with some 3rd party tools, but then the printer power supply died. I called HP customer support again and was told to buy a new HP printer.

Needless to say, this is the last HP printer I will own. I suggest looking at some of the Brother models instead.

Somehow my husband managed to rig this for OS X, but when we upgraded to Snow Leopard we could not get the iMac and this printer to talk to each other. When it was working it was great. Only buy this printer if you run a PC. Yes, HP has an alleged Mac driver on its website but it is completely worthless.

It woorks very well.
But when I cancel it because of error, it took forever to cancel.
So I can't wait anymore an I turn off and turn on gain.
Sometimes I use next printer in other to finish it quickly.
This is not convenient compare to other printer.
These printers were (are) a dime-a-dozen and can be found on the cheap (~$40). I happened to come across a couple of these printers (still New-In-Box) and hung them off a couple computers. They are simple, no-frills, monochrome laser printers that I have found to do a decent job, although there is a reportedly a bug in the spooler when dealing with large PDF files. Read the other reviews and forums for the details. The purpose of this "review" is to possibly save others from the headache I first had with these printers when trying to access them across a LAN as a printer share under Windows Vista (64). I had the same headache that many others have faced (google reveals many forums on this subject, "Laserjet 1020 will only print test pages over a LAN") getting this printer to work by "connecting" to it as a printer share. However, I finally did get it to work wonderfully over a network. Install the printer on the host (local) machine and share as you normally would, however on the client (remote) machine(s):

- Do NOT install any drivers. Vista already has built-in HP drivers for this printer that will work fine.

- Do NOT "connect" to this printer as you normally would for a network printer share.
(I.e., navigating to HOSTNAMEPRINTERNAME, right-clicking, and selecting "connect".)
Instead:

- Go to Control Panel --> Printers (or Start --> Printers)

- Select "Add a Printer" in the top menu

- Select "Add a Local Printer"
(Bear with me, this will become network printer)

- Select "Create a New Port"

- Select "Local Port"
(Continue bearing with me, this will become a network printer)

- Select "Next"

- A dialogue box will appear for you to "Enter A Port Name"

- Enter the absolute network path to the printer, i.e., HOSTNAMEPRINTERNAME
- Select "OK"

- A dialogue box will appear having you select the printer from a list of pre-installed drivers in Vista, choose HP on left and Laserjet 1020 on right.
Don't worry, this will be a proprietary HP driver for the Laserjet 1020 under Vista and not just a Microsoft basic printer driver.
You will have full functionality and options.

- The printer should now be in your list of printers and working over the network.
(Test it out by printing a test page, printing from a web browser, word processor, etc.)

A nice advantage to installing the printer in this manner is that since the printer is "local" (although using remote port), you will have full control over all the print options in the driver. A printer icon will also appear in your system tray when you print as well. Double clicking it shows the printer que, just the same as if the printer truly was local.

Only small caveat with this method is that since the drivers are really "attached" to the port, the remote printer is always going to appear online and "Ready" even if it is turned off.

Works fine with Linux (all distros, all arch) as well. Download and build the drivers from source.

[...]

.

Printer was in excellent condition and came in short time. Would buy from them again

I'll keep it simple...I get a lot of 'smooth use' out of this lit'l thing at my small business. Great, no me arrepiento (no regrets)! I wish I could find a laserjet 'all in one' in this 'price effectiveness' range as well.

There is a known issue with this printer when printing PDFs. If you scan an image to a PDF and then attempt to print the PDF the printer spool crashes. Not only do you lose access to this printer but you also lose access to any other printer. The problem occurs with all Windows OSs but happens on a regular basis with Vista. Loaded several different print drivers recommended by HP but nothing worked. So proceed with caution.

I work in a busy law office and use this printer all day long. It almost never jams, uses toner very slowly, and is just an all-around excellent printer. Great investment - don't hesitate for a moment if you are considering buying a fast, inexpensive laser printer.

Pros: Very Fast Printer, Low cost to operate

Buyer beware! I had purchased at least a dozen of these printers for our office, after nearly 1 1/2 years using these printers, we now only have 2 of these still working. This HP product is nothing more than an expensive paper weight. There is a confirmed, major flaw when you print PDF files to it and HP/Adobe don't seem to care about resolving the issue. If you check out the HP support forum on this product you will discover that when printing from Adobe Acrobat, it will crash the print spool service and keep crashing (if you try restarting the service). You have to jump through hoops deleting files from your Windows system directory and if you want to print a pdf file, you have to go to print... --> click Advanced button and place a check mark in "Print as image" for it to work, and it may not work in all situations. The forum members have discussed possible work arounds at length, but the problems still exist.

On top of that, I've had several of these things shedding off thin, plastic or mylar sheeting that must be part of the drum, ruining any chance of salvage. After several month of use, most of these printers in our office began squealing so bad, that I just had to trash them and replace them with something else.

HP is really starting to let me down with the quality of their products. We have an HP 4Plus that is at least 15 years old and it is still going strong. I've had nothing but trouble with HP over the past several years and have now opted to replace our office laser printers with Brother.

I bought this printer 1n 1/2006. I have used it in a tax business. This little printer just keeps on going. After 3 years I have printed more than 45,000 copies with cheap copy paper and compatible hp ink cartridges without any problems.

Installing one of these printers is always a miserable experience. The install program constantly tries to load USB printing support FOR WINDOWS 98, leading to an "unrecognized object". The only way to get a working install on the first try is if you have already installed some other kind -any kind- of USB printer in the past.
Doesn't work well with network print servers or USB switches.

Extremely finicky as to which USB cable it will work with, need to have 2 or 3 cables on hand to find one it will accept. Of course HP doesn't provide one.

I don't have time for this kind of nonsense every time one of my users needs a new printer, and have switched to Brother.

I picked up the HP Laserjet when I started working full time from home. I am not sure what is up with the Amazon pricing, I picked my up brand new for around $120 from Best Buy on special, brand new in July 2007. The printer is a basic no-frills lazer printer that does a fantastic job.

At home it is working well with my Windows 2000, and Windows XP machines. I managed to get the drivers installed on Vista and that is fine although there do seem to be some glitchy incompatibilities. If I run out of paper when I am printing for example the popup that the printer driver sends up is not a regular window and comes with a Vista warning but other than that it works no problems - things seem fine with Vista SP1 as well. I have not been able to get this working with my Mac or CentOS -- drivers for Linux for this particular model seem to be hard to come buy however I have not looked very hard for the last year or so. The 1022 on the other hand seemed to be widely supported!

As it is the printer is setup as a shared network printer running from my vista box and my wife and I are having no problems with it at all. I understand you can find drivers online but I don't actually need to print from my Mac and its no big deal to print from Windows if I need to get an OpenOffice doc printed that I prepared on Linux.

Drivers aside once the printer is running it is great. The quality of the output is outstanding and it does what it is supposed to do.

I have had this printer for about a year. It is a great printer and I think it is a bargain considering the quality of the printing and the reliability of the machine. There are no negatives. Even if you have an inkjet printer it pays to get one of these just to do work that doesn't need color. The original cartridge lasts for a long time if you use the economical printing mode.

Pros: Easy to useExcellent duplexing capabilityEfficient use of ink
(Source: www.shopping.com)
We got this printer last year and have really liked it because it works pretty fast and we wanted something to print just text so we wouldn't have to keep replacing inkjet carts. We also got a NETGEAR PS121 USB 2.0 Mini Print Server and it has all worked on our home network pretty well together, including with a PC that runs Win 98se (which had, much to my suprise, a usb port which was mandatory to set up the print server).

I couldn't be happier with this printer. I'm a writer and a writer who doesn't particularly like reading off a computer screen. I can't see the flow, and make easy notes, or get an overall vibe of the thing while reading off a screen.

Plus, I'm also starting a PhD program in the next month and so printing is a necessity.

I don't need the absolute fastest, and I don't need the absolute best quality. What I need is a solid, laser printer that fits into my decidedly narrow budget.

This fit perfectly and it works perfectly as well.

I'm very pleased.

This is by far, the absolutely best printer (for black and white images) I've ever purchased / used. The toner cartridges last for 2 to 3 thousand pages and the images are perfect every time - and they've printed out in the time others machines would be warming up (like my Ink Jet unit).

Thanks HP ... WONDERFUL PIECE OF EQUIPMENT at a reasonable, affordable price. You've renewed my faith in HP ... KEEP IT UP.

This is a great printer until you begin to have spooler issues. It prints quickly & the ink lasts a long time; however, after a short time of satisfactory use you will likely encounter a "print spooler subsystem app has stopped working" error message. This error occurred for me when trying to print pdf documents. The error prohibits any printing, the error message will pop up frequently (even when you haven't sent anything to the printer) and the issue never goes away (there are a few temporary fixes). This error occurred three times for me and I had to finally replace this printer. The HP website has more information on this issue. I highly recommend researching this if you consider buying this printer...but really, don't waste your money.

This printer is hands down, the best piece of technological equipment I've ever invested in. I absolutely love it. The toner lasts a good long time, the price is low (although I'm not sure why the price has nearly doubled since I bought it a few months ago -- maybe it's all the rave reviews!), and is the fastest printer I've ever used.

I can't recommend it enough! HP has all my computer business from now on.
