I used this lens to shoot a weekend motors ports event and took roughly 2000 photos without a hitch. I was able to get close to the action with most pictures coming out sharp; only a few could have been sharper. The light weight helped as I schlepped my camera, lenses and gear around the race track. The only significant downside is the lens hood which does not allow the lens cap to be put on or taken off easily. Focus was not always as fast as I would like either but for the money I can't complain too loudly.

one of the best 55-200's for the price. lightweight, compact, 1/2 the price of the sony comp. lens, with just as good quality. A real steal! it's not super fast, but you would have to pay much more for an f2.8 lens. the biggest weakness is the plastic mount.

consumer reports rated it #1 in its class and i agree.
i bought this to fit my sony a100 dslr and they work perfect together
I use this Tamron 55-200 lens as a companion for my Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 lens which makes a great lightweight and small camera kit for "go anywhere" use. Image quality is NOT compromised!
The optical quality in this lens really surprised me as it is better than my Minolta 70-210 f4.0!
The build quality is "OK" for a lightweight plastic design, but the optics are so awesome, it really deserves a nicer build.

Inexpensive zoom that is small fast and sharp. Used on Disney vacation for some very good pictures. A bargain.

The rating is not a Five Star only because its build is not as solid as higher priced lenses but it is of perfectly adequate construction. Obviously anyone buying this is making some compromises. The glass is plastic. The aperture range is smaller than we'd all like. The manual focus is a hassle.
That said, I am THRILLED to own this lens.
For the money you pay you get a heck of a lot, especially when the rebate is in effect. The zoom range on my cropped sensor camera (Sony A300) is 80-300 which is fabulous for most zoom purposes. I can't shoot soccer or football because the lens isn't long enough and fast enough (f/4-5.6) but that would have been very impressive at this price. Under the vast majority of situations where light is good, this lens will do the job. The images are crisp, I like the bokeh, and the macro gives it extra versatility.
As a first lens after the lens that came with your DSLR, I highly recommend it.

This product was ordered in August it is almost November, delivery is no where in sight. This might be a great lens but Amazon cannot deliver, Tamron cannot deliver. I have been receiving excuse since August, I called Tamron and they do not have a CLUE! Bottom line is Sigma makes the same lens, buy theirs dont patronize these other yahoo's.
I bought this to supplement my kit lens that came with my SONY Alpha 300. I read reviews prior to purchase that the lens was not quiet, but I haven't heard enough noise to complain about it. It is fairly quick, with very few "stutters" in my experience so far. The optics seem to be very good, though I must admit that as an amateur, I do not have a very wide basis to compare it against. I am very happy with the results I have seen with my camera.

I normally don't use this zoom range very often (I do mostly landscapes), but I still wanted a zoom tele for some of my work and it had to be light and compact for my backpacking trips.
After a week of use in the field, I'm pleased to report that this lens has exceeded my expectations in terms of image quality. With the three foot minimum focus distance, I can get some great close-up shots of wildflowers with a nice out-of-focus bokeh background. The 300mm effective range is also great for getting those distant objects.
Highlights seem to be well controlled with a negligible amount of CA. I do stock photography as well, and this lens is certainly capable of producing stock-worthy images.
AF is reasonably fast with decent smoothness in the zoom. Manual focus ring is very small and really isn't designed to be used for serious work.
The lens is incredibly light and has a bit of a cheap feel to it, but construction otherwise appears to be solid. This lens however does come with a 6 year warranty.
This lens is comparable in image quality to the Zuiko 40-150mm which I used to use and retailed for $400.00. This Tammy beats the Sigma 70-300mm APO by a longshot.
A definite recommend for anyone looking for an affordable and compact tele.

The build quality of this lens in not very good - all plastic and the filter rotates when focusing and zooming.. so not good for polorizer filters.

But the image quality makes up for this - very very good colour/contrast and sharp wide open and on both ends of the zoom range.

Bottom 'line': the build quality is terrible... but the image quality is AMAZING in good light.

If your on a tight budget and need a zoom lens - you can't go wrong with this lens.

I use this as my primary lens for all applications from portraits to wildlife and the performance is MUCH better than I expected.

Coupled with a 2x teleconverter, you should never need another zoom lens again.

I take a lot of pictures at my son's soccer and football games and this lens has worked great. It is easy to mount so I can change lenses quickly and not miss anything. This lens also gets me into the middle of the action. I can actually see their facial expressions!
