This was a great DVD recorder for a year. After 1 year the "welcome" message came on and never went back off. Even after unplugging it for days it still wouldn't go off after I plugged it back in. No buttons worked even the power button didn't work. I called Sony and they told me it would need to be repaired by shipping it to a service center thousands of miles away. On my dime of course. Funny thing is this unit died just months after the warranty expired.

It's junk. Don't buy it.

Sony makes the ONLY DVD recorder in the world that you can't pause while recording. That's just plain stupid. Remind me never to buy Sony again. I'd give it zero stars if I could.

Like many posters I was thoroughly upset with the lack of a RECORD/PAUSE button on either the machine or the remote. Thanks to previous poster VIDEO ROCK I'm reiterating what this person said. If you have an earlier SONY DVD recorder simply use the PAUSE/RECORD button on that machine's remote. It works perfectly. THANK YOU so much for posting that bit of info. It totally changes the way I feel about this machine. The extra speeds offered in comparison to earlier Sony DVD recorder models is a real plus. I use to have to use extra DVD'S and split most concerts and operas onto two discs if I didn't choose to go from the SP(2hr)speed to the LP(4hr)speed. This machine offers two speeds in between them, the LSP(2hr34min) and ESP(3hr4min)speed. These often come into play and the resolution isn't all that bad. I now like this machine, especially its' automatic thumbnailing of scenes for each recorded listing.

Pros: Excellent picture quality, "chase" playback, editing function
Cons: No pause button
The Bottom Line: The RDR-GX330 serves all the functions of a DVD recorder that I need. But if you have to have a pause botton, look elsewhere

The no pause was like a car i once had with no ashtray but it had everything else on it so you just get past it and go on.. This recorder has everything else on it I am happy with it as it was a gift so none of my money was used for it but to works great

GOOD:
-Many sub-$200 DVD recorder has monoral TV tuner, but this SONY GX330 has STEREO TV tuner. So you can record and play stereo sound. This point is important, because company's spec sheet often omits this fact.
-Many sub-$200 DVD recorder has cumbersome DVD disk-initializing-finalizing procedure. But SONY GX330 is very user-friendly interface. It automatically does both procedure. Using DVD+RW, I was able to play recorded disk on my Dell Inspiron Laptop without any extra step.
BAD:
-Other reviewers complain about DVD disk compatibility issue, but fail to mention that all other DVD recorders also have the same issue. SONY GX330 has actually less issues. User should remember that DVD recorder is still more complicated compared to the VCR, but it's worth it.

I HAVE HAD ANOTHER SONY IN THE PAST AND WAS NOT SURE THAT I WANTED ANOTHER. THIS ONE WAS RECOMMENDED AND I'M GLAD I PURCHASED IT. NOT ONE 'DIRTY' DVD YET. SUPER!

Thought you'd all like to know that the newest vintage of Sony recorders hasn't yet changed any of its shortcomings. The RDR-GXD -455 still records well but the disk can't be played even on a high-end Sony DVD player. This is as of October 2007.

I like it. My Sony DvD recorder works very well. good customer service and the package was delivered as promised and in a very good condition!

For the price, this is an excellent product. My only reservation is that I personally don't find it very intuitive to use...but the directions are reasonably good for the non-AV geek. Best of all, it was here two days after I ordered it. Would have no problems recommending both product and vendor.

If you buy this DVD player/recorder, just be aware that if your player is off and you want to get a disc out, you are going to wait nearly 30 seconds for it to turn on, boot up, and finally eject the disc. When it is on and you insert a disc it takes approximately 15 seconds to start playing. You may say, "big deal, It makes a good recorder." I would agree, but since ejecting and inserting/playing discs are the operations I do 90% of the time, this is a real annoyance. I had a really cheap DVD player that didn't make me wait at all, so I guess I was used to instant response. This one takes its time to respond, but I imagine it has to do with the fact that it also supports so many different formats.
I have enjoyed how well it records discs however.

I've only had the opportunity to use the recorder just once, but found it very easy to use. I did have some problems determining what option the cursor was highlighting, when there were only two options, but soon figured that out. I was able to record a video disc with relative ease and looking forward to copying the other 300+ discs.

Bought the product after reading reviews on Amazon
Was not disappointed. It performed great. The one touch transfer
to DVD feature is fantastic.
I had a Lite-On DVD Recorder. It was giving trouble when copying
DVCs from a camcorder - introduced noise, gaps and sync-loss in audio.
Re-recorded these tapes from camcorder to Sony DVD Recorder - was perfect - no problems

I was hoping we could get a comprehensive list of what media types (and brands) have worked and...

Easy to use, and worked great. Copied all my VHS tapes to DVD and reduced a lot of clutter.

I purchased this DVD recorder with the intent of enhancing the picture of one of my 15 inch LCD HD TVs by using the component output, as well as having a device to record weekly TV programs. This recorder has met that purpose. The recorded material is of very good quality as is the picture on the pass-through to the TV. This recorder is easy to set up and to use. I would recommend this DVD recorder.

I recieved my new Sony RDR GX330 DVD recorder last week. I have tested all of the features of this new unit. My opinions are as follows
1. Wonderful inprovement over the GX315. That machine was a disaster for Sony. Basically the 315 was a peicer.
2.The picture on the GX330 is extremely crisp and clean on playback of recorded material and stock DVD movies.
3.The remote control is designed correctly. This remote does not have hidden door with the record and record stop buttons. This remote has the buttons at the bottom of the remote control where they should be.
4.The GX330 has all the inputs and outputs on the rear back panel including an input and output for S Video. The GX315 did not have this feature.
5.Overall, it is great unit for the money at $229.
Go ahead and buy one. You will not be disappointed.

It is new and cabled in , But I cannot get a system menu or anything HELP me if you can. I could...

The positive aspects of this product are:

1. It is fairly easy to set up and use (if you are proficient at setting up and programming a VCR, you should not have any problems using this unit).

2. Recorded material when played back is of high quality.

3. A quality product at a reasonable price

The negative issues that I have with this product are the slow loading time and slow formatting time.

There's only one reason why you record tv shows--so you can watch them later commercial free. Now, maybe there is some fancy, high tech way to edit commercials out with this unit, but the manual is barely understandable by the everyday layperson who just wants to collect season 3 of Numbers to watch later. I don't know what VR is, or chasing, or any of that crap. All I want to do is record a tv show without commercials. So it makes sense that every other recording device since recording was invented allows you to pause recording when a commercial comes on. But when I tried that, it gave me the message "Operation not available while recording". Why not??? It's kind of the point!!! I read the manual cover to cover--nothing. I called customer service. They weren't very helpful, just went through the same manual, and finally suggested that I simply stop recording when commercials come on, then start again when they show comes back on. Which would mean I'd have a minimum of 4 titles 10-15 minutes long just for one show! That's ridiculous. This is so basic to recording that I am flabbergasted, I never would have thought to check if the machine could do this, why would it not? And then I noticed the playback at SLP mode was jilted, jumpy, and not at all high quality. Don't get this product

Whether you buy this is determined on the features you want, but for how much you pay, it will be very hard to find any competition. The most similar competitor is the Panasonic ES15S.

What you get:
- Ability to dub your home movies to DVD
- If you have a Sony camcorder, you can do 1-touch dubbing and receive additional features due to the iLink interface (I purchased the additional 6ft iLink/4-pin Firewire cable for $2 at an online retailer).
- Support of most DVD formats
- Chasing playback (rewind-pause-fast forward, while recording), when using the DVD-RW (vr formatted by the recorder).
- Analog cable input
- Component video input, so you can output from your digital cable box and record those digital channels.
- Digital audio (coaxial) output, for dolby digital (incl DTS) output.
- The on-screen displays and some menus are translucent (see-through black), and extend on the bottom or right edge.

All of this for around $100 is a steal, and is slightly less than the Panasonic ES15S. If you purchase, view your available buying options (retailers), and choose one with a price and review rating that satisfies you.

Notes on the chasing playback:
- While recording, you click Options, a menu extends from the right
- You hit Enter to select the default highlighted item, which is chasing playback.

Other notes:
- The slow load times (60 seconds) occur when you have a disc in the drive, but you can watch TV and do other functions while your disc is being read. It isn't like you have to wait for a frozen device.
- Those who want to finalize the disc and make it playable in other devices... you probably are recording to take the disc with you, thus won't care about chasing playback, so you won't be using the VR formatted DVD-RW discs anyway.
- For me, unless I'm recording my home movies to DVD-R, I plan to keep my DVD-RW disc in the drive all the time and use the device like a Tivo.
- Note that if you want to use a dual layer disc, only the +R format is supported, not -R, -RW or +RW. This isn't much of an issue, but be aware of what media you like to use, and if you need to buy additional storage media.
- Lack of a rec pause button is a little annoying, but I don't care much, because I can edit out commercials afterwards or simply buy a cheap replacement remote for the GX300 (the predecessor to this model) and program the button into my universal remote.

I bought this unit mainly to record TV programs.
I decided on
purchasing the Sony RDR-GX330 DVD Recorder instead of
the newer Sony Models. I found out the newer recorders
namely the Sony RDR-GX355 DVD Recorder have copy
protection, Macrovision. They do no record HBO or pay per
views. This unit does! BTW my cable system is Time Warner.
I have no problems playing pre-recorded movies (store
bought first run movies).
I am glad I waited 6 months because this DVD Recorder was
listed for $30.00 more.
I really like purchasing items from B&H Photo. B&H offers
great prices and fast shipping. My Sony RDR-GX330 DVD
Recorder was packed very good. The original box packed
inside another box in cased in "styrofoam peanuts".
Thanks B&H Photo!

Pros: Burner offers very easy recording and editing of DV tapes. It also runs DV camera and lets you take clips right from tape to DVD - multiple in and out points. Records movies, TV ext. and great documentation! This thing is exactly what I needed.
Cons: No color editing
Other Thoughts: A nice feature would be to add color settings / filters to each track as needed.
